House Style

Always spell out the words page and pages. Do not abbreviate as p. or pp. For example, use "read pages 52–68" instead of "read pp. 52–68."

Use inclusive page ranges. For example, use "pages 322–357" instead of "pages 322–57" and "pages 203–207" instead of "pages 203–7."

A period should not follow the reading assignment.

Correct: Hebert, pages 6-19
Incorrect: Hebert, pages 6-19.

Capitalize the word chapter when you are referring to a specific chapter. Lowercase chapter if you are referring to a chapter in general.

Hebert, Chapter 9
In Chapter 9, the authors discuss . . .
In the chapters leading up to this event in the novel . . .

Capitalize the word lesson when you are referring to a specific lesson. Lowercase lesson when you are referring to a lesson in general.

In Lesson 10, we will discuss the impact of . . .
Each lesson will present a new topic.
Later lessons will focus on the practical applications of . . .
The mid-course exam will cover the material in Lessons 1-6.

Capitalize the phrase Lesson Cover Sheet.

Use arabic numerals with point values.

Correct: Multiple-choice questions will be worth 7 points each.
Incorrect: Multiple-choice questions will be worth seven points each.
