Textbooks are not included in the enrollment fee. If you cannot obtain a textbook from your school, you may order one from the following bookstores. The following bookstores are notified of the specific editions of the textbooks required for LSU Independent & Distance Learning courses. College Level Courses
Qualified high school students may enroll in our college courses. Please contact our office at (225) 578-3171 or 1-800-234-5047 for further information.

Course Credit
Your high school principal must authorize course enrollment, grant earned credit, and certify that credit to the Louisiana Department of Education for application toward your graduation requirements. Each course is equivalent to one semester's work and one-half unit of high school credit. When you successfully complete a course, your high school, not the Office of Independent & Distance Learning, awards Carnegie Units of credit.

If you are not presently attending high school and wish to take high school courses for credit toward a diploma, you should seek approval from the principal of the state-approved high school from which credit and/or a diploma is sought.

Deadlines
IMPORTANT DEADLINES
The maximum time allowed to complete a course is nine months. A three month extension may be requested. (See Extension and Transfers)

The maximum number of lessons that may be accepted in each course is two per seven days. Please note that you are not required to send in two lessons a week. Provided you can meet your deadlines, you may send in fewer than two lessons a week.

During the month of July, you may submit three lessons per seven days.

The final examination must be taken at least three weeks prior to your school's deadline in order to guarantee that grades can be processed and reported before that deadline.

Additional time (at least 10 days) should be allowed for obtaining textbooks and supplies if these are ordered from one of the places listed under Bookstores.

Diploma Program
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA COMPLETION PROGRAM
The Office of Independent & Distance Learning offers a diploma completion program for adult students who earned credit from one or more Louisiana high schools, but who left high school before graduating. Additional information concerning this program may be obtained by clicking here or by contacting Independent & Distance Learning, 1211 Pleasant Hall (map), or by calling (225) 578-3199 or (800) 234-5047 HSDiploma@doce.lsu.edu.

Students with Special Needs
If you have a disability and/or require accommodation(s) for completing a course, you must first verify that your school has the documentation required to allow for the accommodation. You need to do this as soon as you enroll. If you take your exams at your school, inform your guidance counselor that you will need the same accommodation(s) provided for your in-school coursework. If you take your exams at LSU, contact our office to inform us that you will need a testing accommodation. We will obtain the required testing accommodation information from your guidance counselor. Check out LSU Office of Disability Services.

Enrollment
HOW TO ENROLL
Read all of the policies and procedures that are provided for you on this website. Enrollment is not restricted to Louisiana students. There are no out-of-state fees for students enrolling from other U.S. states.

Complete an official application form.

Enroll at any time during the year. At least two-and-one-half months are normally required to complete a half unit of credit (the work of one semester). See your high school counselor for details.

Obtain an approval signature from your high school principal or counselor on the application form.

With the school's approval, you may enroll in more than one course at a time. You may even enroll in both semesters of the same subject (both halves of a full unit of credit), provided that one course is not a requirement for the other.

Before you can enroll in the following courses, however, you must have completed the specified prerequisite: Art 122; French 142, 143 and 144; Algebra 412; Geometry 425 and 426; Algebra 431 and 432; Biology 512; Chemistry 532; Physics 542; Spanish 146, 147, and 148. Prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions.

Return the completed form, along with a check, a money order, or credit card information for the appropriate fees to Independent & Distance Learning.

If you fax your application, do not mail the original to Independent & Distance Learning.

Examinations
You are responsible for submitting all required lessons before taking examinations. Examinations will not be administered or mailed until all required lessons have been submitted and accepted according to the two lessons per seven calendar days policy. You may only take one mid-course exam and one final exam per course. You should take your exams when you are thoroughly prepared. It is strongly recommended that examinations be taken when the appropriate material is completed, as pointed out in the course guide. You are strongly recommended not to take your mid-course and final examinations on the same day. If you are enrolled in more than one course, you may take a maximum of two exams on the same day. Independent & Distance Learning is required to allocate two hours for each examination. Even if you complete an exam in less than two hours, you will not be allowed to take another exam within the same two-hour period.

Fees
A fee of $86 for each one-half unit together with a $10 course guide processing fee must accompany the application. Textbooks are not included in the registration fee; you must make a separate payment to the appropriate bookstore for textbooks. Do not send money for textbooks to Independent & Distance Learning. Payment may be made in the form of a check, money order, or credit card payment (VISA or MasterCard). There is a $25 charge for returned checks.

General
HOW INDEPENDENT STUDY WORKS
The LSU Independent & Distance Learning Program allows you to work toward high school completion while studying in the convenience and privacy of your home--or any other place!

Upon enrolling, you will be mailed a course course guide that contains your lessons. You must complete and return them for grading. The graded lessons, along with constructive comments and suggestions, are then returned to you. A midcourse and final examination are administered during each course. Upon successful completion of all required assignments, including passing the final examination, you will receive credit toward graduation. A grade report is sent to you and to your school.

Independent & Distance Learning Program is only for those who are serious about education. It offers the advantage of quality educational instruction at home. Research indicates, in fact, that you can learn a subject just as thoroughly in correspondence study as you can in the classroom. Courses are equivalent to those offered in public and private high schools and are approved by the Louisiana Department of Education.

You must read our policies and procedures carefully before you sign the application statement indicating that you are familiar with our policies.

Grades
WHAT ABOUT GRADES?
You must pass the final examination in order to pass the course, regardless of lesson grades earned.

Only one mid-course exam and one final exam per course may be taken.

Provided the final examination is passed, the final grade is based on your performance on the lessons and the examinations.

The final course grade is determined by the instructor.

Grading scale:
Grades of "A," "B," and "C" are satisfactory.
A grade of "D" is passing, but unsatisfactory.
A grade of "F" indicates failure.
No course credit is given if your course grade is an "F."

You cannot expect last-minute grading of lessons or examinations. You must take your final exam no later than three weeks before your deadline to have your grade.

Your graded exams are kept on file in our office for three months.

Independent & Distance Learning cannot give your final grades to you over the telephone. Your grade will be mailed to you within 24 hours of our receiving it from the instructor.

You can view your grades by visiting our website.

Prospective Graduates
If you are a graduating senior, you must read this paragraph very carefully! If you plan to use an Independent & Distance Learning course to complete graduation requirements, you must enroll at least two and a half months prior to your school's deadline for completion of the course. Along with your application, you must attach a completed Graduating Senior Checklist Form. Applications for prospective graduates will not be processed without the completed checklist. You must then begin submitting lessons immediately and continue at a pace that will allow you to complete the course by your deadline. The responsibility for completing the course in time to graduate is yours! We must have your completed final exam no later than three weeks before your school's deadline. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee that you will have course credit in time to take part in your class graduation ceremony. Check with your school now for your graduation deadlines.

Home School
HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS
If you are a home school student, you are encouraged to use our courses in your curriculum. For each finished course, a grade report is issued to document completion of the course. In addition, our office can provide a full record of courses completed through our program. For more information about enrollment procedures, please contact our office.

Secondary students who are home schooled WILL NOT earn a regular high school diploma unless they return to an approved school and meet all the necessary credits and requirements needed for high school graduation. Upon completion of the home schooling program, students must contact the local Adult Education Center regarding necessary procedures for obtaining the GED equivalency diploma.

Honesty
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Dishonesty of any kind with respect to lessons, examinations, or alteration of records will not be tolerated.

You are responsible for preparing your own work and must do so without any outside assistance. Lessons may be discussed with others (such as tutors), but the actual response must be your own work.

Examinations must be completed in the presence of an approved supervisor and without the assistance of books, notes, devices, or outside help, unless specified otherwise in the examination directions.

If you help prepare another student's lessons or examinations, you will be considered as guilty as the student who accepts your aid.

If it is determined that you acted dishonestly with respect to lessons, exams, or alteration of records related to lessons or exams, you will receive an F in the course. All fees will be forfeited.

Postal Service
USE OF THE POSTAL SERVICE
You are responsible for paying postage on all lessons you send to Independent & Distance Learning. Corrected lessons are returned by first-class mail at our cost; however, there is an air mail service charge of $50 per course if you live in a foreign country. If you live in Canada or Mexico, you do not need to pay additional postage.

You must take mail time into consideration when determining the amount of time it will take to complete a course. It may take at least three or four days for a lesson to reach Independent & Distance Learning and the same amount of time to get back to you. Sometimes lessons are lost in the mail; therefore, you MUST MAKE COPIES of all your lessons. If you do not have access to a photocopier, you might want to make carbon copies of your lessons or transfer the information into a notebook. Independent & Distance Learning does not accept responsibility for lessons that are not received. Lessons that are not received must be redone and resubmitted by the student within our two lessons per seven days policy. Lessons are recorded as received on the date they are received in our office, if eligible (not the date they were mailed).

Records
ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL RECORDS
In accordance with Louisiana State University's Policy (PS-30) on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, information about a student generally may not be released to a third party without the student's written permission. Exceptions under the law include parents of a student who is under 18 years old, state and federal educational and financial institutions, and law enforcement officials. The policy also permits students to review their educational records and to challenge the contents of those records. Students may view their own records on our website.

Some student information (name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, dates of enrollment, enrollment status, college, major, academic awards, and degrees earned) is considered public or directory information. Students may prevent the release of public information during their enrollment by contacting Independent & Distance Learning in writing.

Re-Enrollment
If you fail an Independent & Distance Learning course or if your course expires before it is completed, you may re-enroll in the course only with written permission from the principal of the high school in which you were last enrolled. All lessons must be resubmitted. Your re-enrollment will be based on the same policies that were applied to your original enrollment, including the acceptance of a maximum of two lessons per seven-day period.

Refunds
A refund of 80 percent of the enrollment fee (excluding the $10 processing fee) will be made if these conditions are met:

1. The refund is requested within one month of enrollment (your request must include your name, enrollment number and course number).

2. No lessons in the course have been submitted to Independent & Distance Learning.

Requests for refunds are processed monthly. If you paid by check, you should not expect your refund for eight to ten weeks. You cannot receive a refund because of misinterpretation of information.

If your course includes an audio or a video tape(s) or compact disk and you request a refund, you will be refunded the materials fee(s), provided you return the tape(s) in good condition.

Accept more than two lessons per week. Skipped weeks cannot be made up.

You must use the correct edition of the textbook, as specified in your course guide. Please take care to provide the correct information about the author, title, edition, and date of publication when ordering your books. If complete information is not given when the order is placed, the wrong edition may be sent.

Textbooks listed in the bulletin are subject to change. Throughout the year, course textbooks change, so the textbooks listed on this website may not be the textbook(s) you will use in your course. You are strongly urged to wait until you receive your course guide listing the required textbook(s) before you contact one of these bookstores for price and ordering information. Secondhand and paperback copies of textbooks are often available. If secondhand or paperback books are desired, make that request at the time the order is placed.

When contacting any of the listed bookstores, please tell the staff that you need a textbook for an Independent & Distance Learning course. Independent & Distance Learning courses often use different editions than campus sections of the same course.

Supplementary Reading Materials
If access to supplementary reading materials is required, try your local library. If it does not have the books, you should be able to request them through interlibrary loan services. If the library requires proof that you are taking an Independent & Distance Learning course, notify Independent & Distance Learning. You may use LSU's Middleton Library if you live in the Baton Rouge area, provided you have an I.D. card. In order to obtain an I.D. card, you will need a letter from Independent & Distance Learning verifying enrollment in the program.

Special Features and Enhanced Course Guides
Several courses contain special features and enhancements as part of the instruction.

Some courses offer online assignment submission and/or a course guide available to students on the Internet. To take advantage of this option, you must have access to a computer and to the Internet (you may also complete the course in the traditional manner - a computer is not required unless you wish to submit your lessons electronically). Refer to the course description section in the bulletin or the fact sheet for the course for further details. Online functions are continuously added.

Some courses require access to an audio cassette tape player/recorder or compact disc player. An audio materials fee of $10 must be paid at the time of enrollment unless indicated otherwise. Acquisition of the tapes or CDs is not optional, as the listening component of the course is part of the course requirements. If tapes or CDs are required, the $10 audio materials fee has been added to the course cost listed in the course description. If the tapes or CDs are optional, you may purchase them at the time of enrollment by paying the $10 fee. If the listening component of the course is normally included in the textbook purchase price, there is no additional fee.

Some courses require access to a video cassette tape player (VCR). The cost for a video tape or tapes is usually $25. For some of our courses, acquisition of the video tape(s) is a requirement and payment must be made at the time of enrollment, or you may be required to rent videos from your local video store or other source. For other courses, the video tape(s) is/are an optional supplement that can be requested and paid for at any time during the enrollment period. Please refer to the course description section for details concerning tapes.

Some courses require access to a computer. Please refer to the course description section for further details.

Other courses may require access to e-mail. Please refer to the course description section for further details.

Appealing Your Grade
If you appeal your grade, you must request to review your exam. If you took your exam at LSU, you may come to our office during office hours to review your exam in our office. If you did not take your exam at LSU, you should request that your exam be sent to your proctor so that you may make arrangements to review it.

After reviewing your exam you must make a written request to appeal your grade. Appeals must include documentation to support your claim. Appeals received without the required documentation will not be considered.

Please note that grades may be lowered on re-evaluation.

Extensions and transfers
The time allowed for completion of your course (the enrollment period) may be extended for a three-month period for a fee of $25. Payment must be received by Independent & Distance Learning prior to the expiration of your nine-month enrollment period.

Requests for second extensions must be made in writing and should fully describe the extenuating circumstances that have caused the need for a second extension.

If you cannot complete a course during the extension period, you may re-enroll in the course. Your re-enrollment will be based on the same policies as your original enrollment. This includes the acceptance of a maximum of two lessons every seven calendar days. All lessons must be re-submitted and all exams retaken. If the course version has changed, you will be required to take the new version.

If you wish to transfer from one course to another you must transfer within 90 days of your enrollment and must not have submitted more than half of your lessons. You must also obtain permission from your high school principal and pay a fee of $25, plus $5 for each lesson already sent to the Office of Independent Study. If you have not submitted any lessons, the fee is $25. The nine-month period of enrollment begins from the date of enrollment in the original course. Fees cannot be transferred from you to another student.

Exam Administration
Each course has two exams: a mid-course and a final exam. If you live in the Baton Rouge area, you will take your exams in our office. For most schools outside the Baton Rouge area, you will take your exams at your school, under the supervision of your principal or guidance counselor. Exams will be automatically sent to your school as soon as you become eligible to take them. You are eligible to take the final exam when all lessons are received and posted according to our guidelines. Some schools out of the Baton Rouge are require students to test at our offices. You should check with your school concerning test site policy. If you attend an out-of-state school, please write the name, address, and telephone number of your school on the application form, along with the name of your exam administrator.

Louisiana residents who do not attend a high school may contact our office for a list of approved testing centers. Out of state students who do not attend a high school should arrange to take exams with a local high school principal, a college testing office, an administrative officer of a local accredited college, a public library administrator, a military education officer, or at an American embassy or consulate. LSU Independent & Distance Learning must approve all proctors outside of our system. Please have your proctor submit a letter on official letterhead to our office advising us that he or she will supervise your exams.

You are responsible for any costs involved for exam supervision at an exam site other than our office at LSU.

Students from outside the Baton Rouge area may choose to take their exams in our offices at LSU. Doing so will save the time it takes to mail the exams to and from your school and may save testing fees charged by some exam centers. If you test at LSU and you have a pre-approved disability accommodation, you must make an appointment at least two days in advance of testing.

A relative may not serve as your proctor. LSU reserves the right to select your examination supervisor.
